His masterpiece novel, The City and the Pillar, published in 1948, was the first mainstream novel in the United States to explicitly approach the subject of homosexuality. Vidal is the author of multiple novels, including Burr (the first in his Narratives of Empire series), The City and the Pillar, and Myra Breckinridge. He chose to serve Jimmy Trimble, a teenager with whom he fell in love in boarding school and who provided inspiration for The City and the Pillar, and in doing so betrayed the bigotry of American society. Meanwhile his third novel, published in 1948, featured homosexuality (The City and The Pillar), and in 1968 he published Myra Breckenridge, a satirical comedy about a transsexual. Vidal brought the subject of homosexuality to the forefront even when America wasn't ready to deal with it: When E.P. The City and the Pillar was the first gay novel that I read, unaware that it had practically killed his career in the 1950s, forcing him to work under pseudonyms. He'd dedicated his novel The City and the Pillar to "JT" when it was published in 1948. The author, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and gay icon was 86 years old, whose most well-known novels were Myra Breckinridge, Two Sisters and Lincoln. The New York Times refused to review his next five books. Sometimes recalls aloud — just as I repeat back to him — the epigraph of Gore Vidal's great novel about youth and loss, The City and the Pillar. Gore Vidal: (October 3, 1925- present). But he never forgot Trimble, either. Charles McGrath notes some of the impetus for this hatred in the obituary itself: the fallout from his 1948 book The City and the Pillar: "Mr. The City and The Pillar follows the life of a very confused boy named Jim.
